Dubai: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has become concerned after Pakistan refused to play a match against India and has begun efforts to resolve the issue. ICC Deputy Chairman Imran Khwaja has been assigned the task of persuading Pakistan.

According to Indian media reports, Imran Khwaja will engage Pakistan through backdoor contacts and play the role of a peacemaker. It is feared that the absence of a Pakistan–India match could result in a financial loss of up to Rs 70 billion. The match between Pakistan and India is scheduled to take place on 15 February in Colombo.

Meanwhile, voices have also started to rise at the global level regarding alleged collusion between the ICC and the BCCI. Former England cricketer Mark Butcher stated that special arrangements were made for India in the Champions Trophy. He pointed out that Bangladesh was not allowed to play at an alternative venue, whereas India was allowed to play wherever it wants.

At the same time, Mark Butcher praised Pakistan’s decision, saying it must be acknowledged that Pakistan had taken a strong stand this time. He added that Pakistan had a rare opportunity to put pressure on India and the ICC. He noted that a Pakistan–India match is the most commercially lucrative fixture in world cricket.
