Web Desk: A dramatic new twist has emerged as former Indian Navy officer Commander Purnendu Tiwari has been re-arrested in Qatar, throwing India into yet another serious diplomatic storm and reviving one of the most sensitive military linked cases on the global stage.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs has officially confirmed that Tiwari is once again in Qatari custody. The development has sent shockwaves through New Delhi, as the case had seemingly faded from international headlines. Tiwari was originally arrested in August 2022 along with seven other former Indian Navy officers, a move that had already strained relations.
In October 2023, a Qatari court handed down death sentences to all eight former officers on espionage charges, triggering panic, outrage and intense diplomatic pressure from India. Despite months of behind the scenes negotiations and high-level diplomatic efforts, Qatar refused to hand over Purnendu Tiwari to India in February 2024, citing the seriousness of the allegations.
The renewed arrest has once again exposed India to global scrutiny, deepening fears of prolonged legal battles, worsening diplomatic ties and an international crisis that shows no sign of ending.
