Christopher Nolan will be experimenting with Greek mythology for his next summer blockbuster, The Odyssey.
The first trailer for The Odyssey was dropped by Universal Pictures on Monday, December 22. The trailer offered a proper look at Nolan’s vision of Homer’s ancient Greek poem. Odysseus will be played by Matt Damon. Odysseus will be attempting to return to Ithaca after the Trojan War.
The film is described as “a mythic action epic shot across the world using brand new IMAX film technology.” The Odyssey will be Nolan’s first project since Oppenheimer, which won the majority of awards in 2023. The trailer shows us important moments from Odysseus’ life, which include scenes from the Trojan War, the iconic Trojan horse, and the perilous journey back home.
Odysseus narrates, “After years of war, no one could stand between my men and home – not even me.”
The trailer also showed Tom Holland and Anne Hathaway as Odysseus’s son and wife, Telemachus and Penelope. Tom Holland’s fiancée Zendaya does not appear in the trailer, but she is also playing Athena in the movie. She tells Telemachus to seek news of his father.
Telemachus asks in a previous theatre-only preview, “I have to find out what happened to my father. When did you last see him?”
Jon Bernthal’s character replies, “Some say he’s rich. Some say he’s poor, and some say he perished. Some say he’s imprisoned,” What say you?”
Telemachus asks, “Imprisoned?”
Bernthal responds, “What kinda prison can hold a man like that?”
The Odyssey is going to be Nolan’s most ambitious project yet.
The Odyssey sails into theatres on July 17, 2026.
