FBR targets social media show-offs for tax evasion

Web Desk: Rashid Langrial, Chairman of Federal Board of Revenue, in an informal conversation with media, revealed that notices to 30 individuals have been issued by the FBR. These individuals showcased their lavish lifestyles on social media but underreported their income in tax returns.

People who are displaying expensive homes, clothes, cars and even horses online are now under the FBR’s radar for filing inaccurate or incomplete tax returns.

According to Langrial, comprehensive data has been gathered by FBR on those who either submit incorrect information or fail to submit tax returns while flaunting their wealth on social media.

He said “We will continue robust action against tax evaders across the country,”. He also added that the operations nationwide will be supervised by Chief Commissioner for Enforcement who has been appointed. This will result in all the actions against tax evaders being coordinated under single authority. Compilation of daily reports on the crackdown have also begun.

Some recent progress has also been highlighted by Langrial. It was noted that sales tax collection from the sugar industry increased by Rs. 40 billion in the past year. Before there were separate rates for untaxed and taxed sugar. However, now has warned that anyone who is found holding untaxed sugar stock will face the strictest action.

He also emphasized that Prime Minster Shehbaz Sharif has zero tolerance for tax evaders. FBR has been directed by him to take the toughest possible measures. Langrial also added that on the issues of smuggling custom authorities are now to curb the flow of smuggled goods are conducting daily operations and this campaign will not slow down.

He concluded that harm has been caused by smugglers to custom officials. With two tax officers having lost their lives in line of duty.
