Strong earthquake hits off Japan, Tsunami warning issued

Web Desk: A powerful earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.2 struck off the coast of Japan’s Aomori Prefecture late Monday, Japan’s Meteorological Agency reported. The quake occurred at 11:15 p.m. local time, with its epicenter located at 41.0 degrees north and 142.3 degrees east, at a depth of 50 kilometers.

Seismic Impact

The agency said the earthquake registered an upper 6 on Japan’s 7-level seismic intensity scale, indicating severe shaking capable of causing significant damage in affected areas. The earthquake was so severe that after shocks were felt in Russia as well. Massive power outages were observed after the earthquake and thousands of households are still facing power breakdown.

Tsunami Warning Issued

Following the quake, the Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning for Pacific coastal areas of Hokkaido, Aomori, and Iwate prefectures. Residents in vulnerable areas were urged to evacuate to higher ground immediately.

Early Warning System Activated

An earthquake early warning was issued prior to the quake, giving residents and authorities crucial seconds to take precautions. Officials are monitoring aftershocks and coordinating emergency response measures.
