Islamabad: United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights made misplaced and ungrounded apprehensions about the 27th Constitutional amendment. The amendment was passed by two-third majority of parliament of Pakistan. Pakistan noted these apprehensions with deep concern.

“Like all parliamentary democracies, all legislation as well as any amendment to the Constitution remains the exclusive domain of the elected representatives of the people of Pakistan. Democracy and democratic methods form the bedrock of civil and political rights and therefore, must be respected,” the Foreign Office Spokesperson, on Sunday, said in a press statement.

The parliament of Pakistan followed due procedures enshrined in Pakistan’s constitution to adopt the 27th constitutional amendment.

“We urge the High Commissioner to respect the sovereign decisions of Pakistan’s parliament and avoid commentary that reflects political bias and misinformation,” it was further asserted.

Pakistan is and will remain fully committed to protecting, upholding and promoting human dignity, human rights and basic freedoms which were enshrined in the constitution of Islamic republic of Pakistan. This was further added by the spokesperson

Pakistan has always understood the importance of the work of the High Commissioner for Human rights. However, the apprehensions made did not reflect the ground realities of Pakistan and the reason why this amendment was passed.

President Asif Ali Zardari signed the 27th Constitutional Amendment Bill into law after it was approved by both houses of Parliament

After the approval the bill became the part of constitution.
