Islamabad: Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif chaired a high-level meeting on Pakistan Railways, approving the adoption of a public-private partnership (PPP) model for railway land and property. He said the railways form the backbone of any country’s economy and transport system, and praised recent steps taken to revitalize the railway network.

Digitalization and modernization initiatives underway

Officials told the meeting that multiple measures are underway to improve Pakistan Railways. Seven digital portals under the “Raabta” platform are now fully operational, and 56 trains have been integrated into the system. Furthermore, 14 major railway stations nationwide have been digitized, while Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi, and Faisalabad stations now offer free Wi-Fi. The initiative will extend to 48 additional stations by 31 December 2025.

Freight booking and AI surveillance

The government has launched online freight booking, and Karachi City Station has begun a pilot project for a digital viewing bridge, which will later expand to Papri, Karachi Cantonment, Port Qasim, Lahore, and Rawalpindi. Additionally, Rawalpindi Station has installed 148 AI-enabled surveillance cameras to enhance security.

Improved facilities and outsourcing for revenue growth

Officials also reported progress on installing ATMs, upgrading cleanliness systems, and establishing high-standard waiting areas and information desks for passengers. Meanwhile, four trains have already been outsourced, and 11 more are in the process of outsourcing, expected to generate an additional PKR 8.5 billion in revenue. Similarly, outsourcing 40 luggage vans is projected to bring in PKR 820 million, while two cargo express trains are expected to contribute PKR 630 million more.

Forward-looking reforms

Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif expressed confidence that these initiatives, including digitalization, outsourcing, and infrastructure upgrades, will modernize Pakistan Railways and significantly boost revenue, ensuring a sustainable and efficient transport network for the country.
