Blue Area Islamabad to be made vehicle free

ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority has begun developing Islamabad’s first dedicated pedestrian corridor in Blue Area.

The 800-metre stretch runs from Savour Foods to Khyber Plaza and will remain completely vehicle-free.

The project, costing Rs240 million, aims to create a walking-friendly space with food outlets, digital screens and seating areas.

According to CDA officials, the plan focuses on giving residents a clean and safe urban space where they can walk, dine and shop without traffic issues.

Electric carts will be available for senior citizens, children and visitors with mobility challenges.

Parking will be arranged at the nearby multi-storey plaza, which can hold around 950 vehicles. Another 150 parking slots will be created close to Khyber Plaza.

The authority plans to install interactive LED screens at entry and exit points and set up stalls from well-known food chains to give the area a lively feel.

The project was finalised after discussions with traders of the Blue Area. Officials said the new zone is expected to be completed in about 45 days.

Member Engineering Syed Nafasat Raza said the aim is to develop a modern “walk-and-shop” environment that is family-friendly and easy to access.

CDA believes the pedestrian corridor will become a model for future redevelopment in major markets. If successful, similar car-free zones will be introduced in Jinnah Super and other commercial centres.

At present, Islamabad has only one formal food street, Melody Food Park, which has faced issues due to poor maintenance and parking problems.
