The first trailer for the highly anticipated Michael Jackson biopic Michael has finally dropped. This teaser leans more toward spectacle and nostalgia. As opposed to featuring the controversies that surrounds the singer.
Jaafar Jackson, Michael’s real-life nephew, plays the role of Michael Jackson in this movie. This role makes sense for him because in the trailer he physically captures Michael’s presence. He has the posture, voice, stage precision, and even the moonwalk which all comprise Michael’s persona.
Some may argue that the makeup team could have enhanced his resemblance to Michael more, but the performance seems to be studied and genuine enough.
The trailer opens in a recording studio. A producer says, “I know you’ve been waiting a long time for this. The tracks are made, the songs are ready — let’s take it from the top.”
The trailer then presents a montage of memories. The spotlight focuses on Michael Jackson as he wears the red leather jacket from Thriller and the single white glove.
The moonwalk is also featured and a young Michael Jackson is also seen at a family dinner table with the rest of the Jackson 5.
There is also shot where Michael is putting on makeup and we get a glimpse of his battle with vitiligo.
The marketing, at least for now, seems to focus on the music, the performances, and the myth. Missing from the trailer are the sexual abuse allegations and legal issues which marred Michael Jackson’s later life.
The trailer leads one to believe that there is collaboration from the Jackson estate. Michael is referred to as “the greatest entertainer in the world.”
Antoine Fuqua, who directed ‘Training Day’ and ‘Emancipation,’ will release his film on April 24.
Anticipation with the trailer has been building on social media and for the April release. Fans especially are in awe of Jaafar’s performance and the nostalgic moments.
