The federal cabinet has approved the draft of the 27th Amendment of Constitution. This was done in a gathering at the Prime Minister House in Islamabad.
Prime minister Shehbaz Sharif, who is currently in Azerbaijan, attended the meeting through video call in Baku.
The session was attended by 25 federal ministers such as Rana Sanaullah and Hanif Abbasi. It was aimed at completing the amendment to be presented to the Senate.
This approval is subject to the long consultations and deliberations. Especially most critical provisions such as the establishment of a Constitutional Court.
The Chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Bilawal Bhutto Zardari stated that his party will also endorse this particular measure. However other aspects of the Charter of Democracy would need additional consensus-making.
Although the PPP may have come to an agreement on the Constitutional Court, they are yet to come into an agreement on some other aspects such as issues of dual citizenship. As clarified by Bilawal, the party is not in a position to back these points at the moment.
Bilawal also reiterated the pledge of the PPP to safeguard provincial shares.
He also emphasized on the significance of local government elections and was against non-partisan polls. He ensured that discourse with the PML-N on the 27th Amendment did not offer any alterations to the local government election structure.
Bilawal also explained that the amendment would not interfere with the authority of the President of Pakistan. It will remain to support the supremacy of the civility. Now that cabinet approval has been achieved. The draft amendment is likely to be brought to the Senate to be further discussed and undergo formal legislation procedures.
