Meta has officially launched AI in Urdu

Karachi: Tech giant Meta has officially launched AI in Urdu, enabling millions of Pakistani users to interact with the company’s artificial intelligence tools in their native language for the first time.

Meta announced the launch at an event titled “Future in Focus: AI and Innovation,” held in collaboration with Pakistan’s Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication (MoITT). The event also marked the launch of several national initiatives aimed at accelerating Pakistan’s digital transformation and promoting artificial intelligence (AI) education.

As part of the collaboration, Meta introduced a local edition of its policy guide “Transforming Public Sector Innovation in Asia Pacific with Llama,” developed in partnership with Deloitte. The guide explains how Llama, Meta’s open-source AI model, can help governments enhance public service delivery, improve efficiency and strengthen data sovereignty.

AI Literacy Program

Meta also unveiled an AI Literacy Program in partnership with the Higher Education Commission (HEC), National Computing Education Accreditation Council (NCEAC), MoITT and atomcamp. The program will train 350 non-computer science university faculty members across Pakistan in basic AI concepts, equipping them to prepare students for future workforce demands.

Another key initiative launched was the Government Digital Transformation Xperience (GDTX) 2025, designed to help Pakistani public institutions adopt Meta’s technologies and best practices to drive digital innovation. The program will bring together experts from the public and private sectors to share insights and co-develop effective digital transformation strategies.

Minister for IT Hails Partnership with Meta

Federal Minister for IT and Telecommunication Shaza Fatima Khawaja said the government’s partnership with Meta reflects Pakistan’s commitment to building a “digitally empowered nation.”

“Under the Prime Minister’s Digital Nation Vision, Pakistan is moving toward a future where technology empowers every citizen,” she said. “The inclusion of Urdu in Meta AI marks a milestone that makes technology more inclusive and accessible, ensuring no one is left behind in this digital journey.”

Meta’s Director of Public Policy for South and Central Asia, Sarim Aziz, said the company aims to support Pakistan’s public and educational institutions through the responsible use of AI.

The launch of Urdu-language AI and the government’s joint initiatives signal a growing focus on AI literacy, public-sector modernization, and inclusive digital growth in Pakistan a country positioning itself at the forefront of South Asia’s emerging tech transformation.
