In a big announcement, Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif has said that flood affectees will not have to pay the August electricity bill.
The prime minister addressed the nation on Sunday.
This will only apply for the residents of the areas which were affected by recent floods.
Those who had already paid their electricity bills will be refunded in their next billing cycle.
PM Shehbaz also reaffirmed the government’s support for these people.
“In this difficult time, we are making every possible effort to ease the pain of our people,” he said emphasising that the federal and provincial institutions are fully engaged in rescue and rehabilitation operations.
“We will not rest until every flood victim returns to home,” he said.
Earlier, he instructed the Ministry of Finance to seek relief from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
US shows support for Pakistan
In another news, the US embassy in Pakistan said Washington stands with the flood-affected people.
In a statement, it said the US State Department sent food, tents and medicine for the flood victims. Two US aircraft, C-17 and a C-130, landed in Pakistan with relief supplies.
US Chargé d’Affaires Natalie Baker handed over the aid to Pakistani authorities.
The embassy added that the assistance was approved at Pakistan’s request to support national relief operations.
